Stargazing

Tonight should be a perfect night for stargazing!  It isn’t supposed to be cloudy and it’s a “new moon” which means the moon shouldn’t be visible at all.  This means the sky should be darker which makes it easier for us to see the stars.  Take your time, enjoy the night sky!  Can you find any constellations?  How about making up some of your own?  What do they look like?  What would you name them?

In your camp supply bag there is a ring of cards with well-known constellations that should be visible tonight.  You might want to look at these cards during the day to get familiar with them in the daylight.

This website has lots of great info to help you out tonight.  The second link is a star chart you can print and use tonight to locate where to find the constellations in the sky.

Younger campers can learn more about stargazing here:

There are some great apps for stargazing too.  The ones I use let you point your phone at the sky and they tell you the names of the stars and constellations.  They even show the image the constellation forms, for example, when you aim at the Leo constellation it draws in the image of the lion.  This link has several great app ideas.  If you’re parents are okay with it they are really fun to try out.
