Campfire Songs - Barges and Linger

At camp we sing A LOT of songs.  Many of them are crazy and contain things like, "la dee da my sweet cream soda pop", "a rick of bamboo", "a juicy plum to warm my tum" and of course, "you can't ride in my little red wagon".  These are usually sung and top volume and run on repeat. 😄

We also sing some songs we call "Campfire Songs".  These are calmer, slower, more thoughtful songs that you could sing together around a campfire. They are beloved, but are harder to remember the words to because we hear them less often.

Some campers would really love to learn the words better so I thought I would post a couple here.  On Friday at our last flag ceremony of the season we will sing Barges and then we end our week with Linger, because it is so true.

Barges

Out of my window looking in the night, I can see the barges'

flickering light

Silently flows the river to the sea, and the barges too go

silently.

Barges, I would like to sail with you, I would like to sail

the ocean blue.

Barges, have you treasures in your hold?

Do you fight with pirates brave and bold?

Out of my window looking in the night, I can see the barges'

flickering light

Starboard shines green and port is glowing red

you can see them flickering dead ahead.

[Chorus]

How my heart longs to sail away with you, as you sail across

the ocean blue.

But I must stay beside my window clear,

As I watch you sail away from here.

[Chorus]

Linger

Mmm-mmm, I want to linger

Mmm-mmm, a little longer

Mmm-mmm, a little longer here with you

Mmm-mmm, it's such a perfect night

Mmm-mmm, it doesn't seem quite right

Mmm-mmm, that this should be my last with you

Mmm-mmm, and come September

Mmm-mmm, I will remember

Mmm-mmm, our camping days and friendship true

Mmm-mmm, and as the years go by

Mmm-mmm, I'll think of you and sigh

Mmm-mmm, this is goodnight and not goodbye

Mmm-mmm, I want to linger

Mmm-mmm, a little longer

Mmm-mmm, a little longer here with you
